What is Thicker?

…a note of ‘grazie’ and a happy birthday…

Thanks to Javardh on Unsplash for use of this excellent photo, thick yet fluid with meanings!

Blood, sweat, water
olive oil, wine
vinegar, gel,
milk, juice, ink, brine?

Can a pitcher
hold some ether?
Is a soul mate
just a teaser?

Relationship:
solid, liquid
and vap’rous bond
is unscripted.

Like wax congeals
‘round candle’s wick
the question knows
where lies the thick.

NOTE: Writing on a foundation of gratitude for all the relationships of any kind I’ve ever had in my life, I’m now saying thanks (grazie!) to chef and writer Rita Romano (www.ritasrecipes.com) for assistance to me while I was in contemplation of the age-old question: “What is thicker: blood or water?”

Her best answer was, “Love is thicker than fear,” but after sleeping on it, she said, “Olive oil is thicker than wine.”

My dear friend Rita joins me in a toast to all our friends, especially fine artist Kathryn Henneman (www.kathrynhenneman.com) who celebrates a birthday* (feliz cumpleaños!) today, and to all people who see beyond blood — and water — into the kind of bond that creates, gels, and/or evaporates friends, lovers, neighbors, strangers, politicians, parents, children, and even people in the flesh with unseen entities. Ciao!

*Years before we met, my grandmother (nurse Mary Emma Powers Johnson) assisted Harry Southworth, M.D. in delivering Kathryn from her mother into this Earth. It’s one of my favorite stories…ever.
