This photo, and this herd of sheep, is the property of Johnson Yazzie.

My friend Johnson
creates art, writes.
Tends sheep and sees
natural whites.

This little soul
born Valentines Day
into the snow
shił yá’át’ééh.*

Our family tree
is flow diagram —
so Mary gets
a little lamb.

Pictures, paintings,
stories and rhyme —
generations —
erasing time.

NOTE: In 2011, a group of creatives met at a coffee shop in Phoenix: Matthew Owens, Kathryn Henneman, Sharon Loeff, Johnson Yazzie, Igor Brezhnev, Nicole Duran, Linda Heart, and others, to discuss the state of arts in Arizona. The meeting was so unofficial in terms of creating any sort of mission or purpose. It was enough for us to just meet and get to know one another. I’ll be forever grateful for that day because Johnson listened to my “I’m not Navajo” story and cured my sadness by calling me “sister.” In a few weeks, I am a designated eulogist at the celebration of life of a dear friend and fellow “sister.” The program was sent to me last night and the intent of my other “brother” is to introduce me as “a founding member of The Family You Make Federation.”

Some people spit into a tube and get laboratory-ized to find family, heritage, culture.

That’s too difficult (and yucky) for me.

I just ask to be included and celebrate all “yes” es. When the reward is a little lamb with fleece as white as snow…well…let’s just say it feels a little like living heaven on Earth.

Here are some links, because…electricity and gratitude (not in that order):
