From Day One, for me, coming in to www.medium.com in 2013, I always knew that whatever I wrote here would be donated into the free-for-all internet world. I never once expected to have any personal rights to my work once I pushed it onto this platform. Of course, this goes against the "real" work I do as an editor, working with writers to register their copyrights and to protect their works. In the deepest place in my heart, I know that the ways in which humans exchange money for words has changed due to the scale by which writers have entered new formats to publish. Editing is supposed to be a check-and-balance, but...it doesn't really work when people feel more free than ever to write...and that is why "free" may have entered the minds who prop up the medium platform. (But really...I do not know anything other than I love to read and write, and I love to support other writers.) The End.
